If you’ve been enjoying grooming your dogs and the dogs of friends and family, it may be time to earn your professional dog groomer certification. While it’s not mandatory to have a certificate to work as a dog groomer in Florida, you could gain more clients and income by having one.

There are currently three trusted dog groomer certifications you can choose. While all training programs involve a time commitment from you, and some can be affordable while others are costly, the resulting benefits can have you confirm that you choose the right career.

Here’s what you need to know before you choose one.

International Society of Canine Cosmetologists

The ISCC is global and offers a certificate for dog groomers. You must pass a series of written tests and practical tests. You have various options for testing, which include during their events, dog shows where they may have a booth, and other local regions. There are also multiple levels involved, so you can work your way up. The beginning tests are affordable, but once you head up into styling and what’s called a “300-level thesis), the fees are up to $1500 each. You’ll want to ensure you have plenty of practical experience before you seek a higher level.

International Professional Groomers Inc. (IPG)

The IPG is also global, offering certification to not only individual groomers but also grooming schools, and dog grooming businesses. This program offers two different options for you to choose from. The first is the ICMG program – International Certified Master Groomer. There are five different modules, which start at $785. The second is the APG program for Advanced Professional Groomers. This is where you learn more about shaping, styling, and symmetry, rather than basic grooming skills. The additional cost is $297. They give you five years to complete the program so you can take the first level, then earn while you work your way up.

National Dog Groomers Association of America, Inc.

The NDGAA offers certification through its NCMG – National Certified Master Groomer program. Like the program above, you’ll have to do a variety of practical and written tests involving different dog breeds before you earn your certification. You’ll learn about working, toy, and hound types of dogs, a well as terminology, healthcare, pesticides, and grooming clippers. If you want to expand to grooming cats, this program covers that too. The tests cost $125 and you’ll need to renew your membership once a year for $50.

If you’re already working as a dog groomer then you can benefit by completing practical and written training from one of the above dog grooming schools. Not only will you be able to earn a higher income, but you’ll soon have a doggy waiting list for pet owners eager to hire your services. If you’re not currently working as a dog groomer, most of the schools will also assist you with practicum, job placement, and networking after you have completed their program.
