Did You Know Different Dog Breeds Have Different Grooming Needs?

Dog Grooming

You may think that you’re grooming your dog properly, or that your hired dog groomer spends a few minutes attending to your dog’s needs, but the truth is that each individual dog breed has specific grooming needs.

While it may be easier to find a dog groomer on the Simple Puppy site and app, you should be aware of the right ways to groom your dog. If your dog is mixed breed, choose the following breed category that closely matches your dog’s coat.

These types of breeds have curly coats and include bedlington terriers, kerry blue terriers, and poodles. They don’t shed, but their fur needs to be dematted with a slicker brush, or metal comb, about twice a week. They should visit a pro groomer about once a month.

Long Coarse

These types of dogs have a light undercoat with a long coarse outer coat. These breeds include Lhasa apsos, shih tzus, and Tibetan terriers. All types of tools are suitable. These dogs need to be groomed several times a week, with a visit to a professional groomer once a month.

Long Silky & Long Double

These types of dogs don’t have an undercoat. Long silky breeds include Maltese, silky terrier, and Yorkshire terrier, while long and double breeds include chows, coolies, and samoyeds. The best tools to use are the Slicker and a fine-toothed comb. You can brush them at home every second day. They need a professional grooming about once a month.

Short Double

Breeds that have a short double coat include the Labrador retriever and the Rottweiler. These dogs grow a short double coat. The top part is straight and coarse, while the undercoat is soft and thick. These dogs need to be brushed at least twice a week, but you’ll have to brush them more frequently in the spring and summer when their hair sheds. A variety of tools can be used on them, including the pin brush, metal comb, Furminator, and the Slicker. They should visit a professional groomer about six times a year.

Short Smooth

Dog breeds that have a short but smooth coat include basenjis, doberman pinschers, and pugs. These dogs only need to be brushed once a week with a hound glove or a bristled brush. They can visit the professional groomer about four to six times a year.

Short Wiry

These types of breeds include airedales, schnauzers, terriers, and wirehair dachshunds. These breeds have a short but coarse fur coat that is dense and hard. Their backs will have softer fur. The best type of tool to use is a slicker brush or a medium-toothed comb. You’ll want to brush and comb your dog at least twice a week. These types of dogs need frequent grooming visits, usually about every six to eight weeks.

Even a hairless dog may have some fur on their legs or tail that needs grooming. If your dog’s coat is need of care, you can find a great professional groomer through our Simply Puppy website and app.
